CANTERBURY TRI CLUB SWIM SQUAD

What is it?

A 1-hour, club-based swim session with one coach on poolside delivering a structured blackboard workout. Sessions are triathlon-specific, with training aimed at peaking for the most popular races. The key goals are to keep costs as low as possible for members while creating a strong training hub and community within the club.

What it isn’t

These sessions are not heavily technique-focused. While technique elements will be included, the coach will be managing 2–3 lanes of swimmers, so regular, detailed individual feedback each session is not realistic.

Who is it for?

Triathletes of all levels, from weekend warriors through to elite athletes. Please refer to the pace guidelines in the session times to see where you fit in.

Alternate options for novice/slower swimmers:

Who is it not for?

This is not a learn-to-swim programme. Athletes are expected to be comfortable completing sprint-distance triathlons or longer. You do not need to be a speedster, if you can swim approximately 2:20/100m or quicker, you will be fine.

Expectations / Swim etiquette

  1.  Be On Time & Prepared

    1. Arrive early enough to be on poolside ready to start at the session time.

    2. Bring all required equipment (pull buoy, paddles, tbc fins & kickboard).

    3. Let the coach know in advance if you need to leave early.

  2. Lane Discipline

    1. Learn how to use the clock to follow the sets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVqiBwylhpM

    2. Learn to understand swim intervals (you only need to watch the first ~2mins) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bGHblFBlCU

    3. Always leave the centre of the wall (the T) clear for athletes to turn cleanly when stopped at the end of the pool, when doing longer reps or when getting lapped.

    4. For slower athletes in a lane; be mindful when getting lapped. Stop on the left side of the T on the wall

    5. If overtaking mid-length tap the feet of the swimmer you are passing once before passing.

  3. Listen to the Coach

    1. Pay attention when sets are being explained.

    2. Ask questions if you’re unsure, but avoid disrupting the group.

    3. Follow the session structure even if it’s not your favourite set 😉

  4. Be Aware of Others

    1. Be aware of other swimmers around you at all times.

    2. Give space when starting a repeat

      1. Generally leave a 5sec gap but if there is space leave 10sec

      2. Only leave directly on someone’s toes if you are struggling to keep up and need a draft (communicate this to the person in front of you).

    3. If you need extra rest, move aside so the lane continues to flow smoothly.

  5. Train With a Positive Attitude

    1. Encourage others and help create an inclusive team environment.

    2. Remember that everyone is at a different stage of their swimming journey.

    3. Be open to feedback and willing to try new skills and techniques.

  6. Safety First

    1. Inform the coach of any injuries, medical conditions, or concerns.

    2. Stop and alert the coach immediately if you feel unwell or unsafe.

    3. Follow all pool rules and lifeguard instructions.
