Para / Athletes with disabilities opportunities within Triathlon & Duathlon
At Canterbury Triathlon Club, we are committed to creating inclusive opportunities for as many athletes as possible, including those with disabilities. While this is an evolving area for the club, we are actively working to expand and strengthen our offerings.
Current opportunities include:
Junior Duathlon Series: Para options are available at selected events.
Summer Triathlon Events: Para categories are planned for selected races, with the Tri Festival in December likely to be a most suitable event as the course is flat and accessible.
Primary School Athletes: We support Primary Sport Canterbury, who provide para/AWAD opportunities across their annual triathlon, duathlon, and aquathlon events.
Secondary School Athletes: Dedicated para/AWAD categories are included in both our Secondary School Triathlon and Duathlon events.
Special Olympics: In partnership with Special Olympics New Zealand, we host an adaptive triathlon event at Waltham each March (please contact Special Olympics for further details).
At a national level, athletes can explore the para pathway and classification system through Triathlon New Zealand: https://triathlon.kiwi/getinvolved/paratriathlon/
Triathlon is a Paralympic Games sport. If you have a strong background in swimming, cycling, or running, this pathway offers the opportunity to progress all the way to the highest level of competition.
