Below times are for 25m Competition Pool and running track with grass surface. Standards below are applied with discretion. Depending on athletes development stage they can be swim AND run or swim OR run.

Below times are for 25m Competition Pool and running track with an all weather surface.
When the time trials are conducted on grass, 3sec allowance per 400m (11:25 sec for 1500m) is made for dry-hard & well maintained grass track. In wet conditions, additional allowances may be necessary and will be estimated (athletes are invited for re-testing on all weather surface if in doubt)
Athletes will need to accumulate 4 stars (**** - the same applies for World Champs selection) from a combination of 200m swim time trial & 1500m run time trial (NOT scratch race!). Athletes who achieve a 3-stars will be included in the “On the Radar” group (OTR) and receive special help to develop to NTS standards.
Further to the quantitative criteria athletes should have:
Passion for triathlon
Balanced, controlled posture in swimming; an easy range of cadence in cycling; a natural inclination to adapt and learn from a range of physical activities
Competitive swimming background to at least regional level and/or competitive running background and/or Competitive cycling background and/or competitive background of another sport
Prominent performance at the NZ National Junior Aquathlon and/or Triathlon Championships and in MTR races, OTU junior champs and Australian Junior Series
Eligibility to represent New Zealand in international triathlon competition under ITU rules
Boys ages 16-19 / Girls aged 16/17-20 at year ending December of the WC event
